Some FCE Systems have peer-reviewed research to support them and to satisfy the court's standards for expert testimony in the Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals decision. But the quality of the research is questionable. Their research shows that trained professionals can replicate a trainer's decisions, but only within a wide margin of error, in some cases, up to 50 lbs., which is a huge problem. But our past research is very solid, going beyond determining if a trainee can replicate the trainer, it found that the Blankenship's Validity Profile chose the best combination of Sensitivity (Insincere Effort), and Specificity (Sincere Effort), and that 12 Criteria had 100% Specificity. And the New Blankenship WorkEval improves upon those Sensitivity and Specificity findings, our WorkEval Manual is supported by a solid bibliography of 380 citings, making it the Best Research-Supported FCE System available today, so you don't have to settle for anything less than the best.
When Blankenship developed his first FCE System in 1983, he realized the importance of a strong Validity Profile, which determines if the worker exerted a sincere level of effort and if the FCE results are valid. This is critical since you're determining the worker's safe work ability and whether or not they can return to their regular job or a limited duty job. And if the worker does not exert a sincere level of effort, then these questions are impossible to answer. And without a strong Validity Profile, your reports, professional opinions and legal testimony are all subject to strong legal scrutiny. The Blankenship WorkEval' 8-Point Validity Profile provides you the information about a worker's FCE compliance so you'll feel more secure knowing that your professional opinion is backed by solid research-based criteria.
Most FCE Systems make decisions about a worker's safe lifting weight by a Kinesiophysical approach that relies upon the FCE Evaluator judging the worker's Body Mechanics, Bulging of Prime Muscle Movers, Involuntary Use of Accessory Muscles, Equilibrium, Base of Support, Efficiency and Smoothness of the Movement, Heart Rate and Respirations and Peripheralization of Symptoms. But nearly all of these criteria have no research supporting them, they're based on "Professional Opinion and Professional Bias", and the worker's "pain reports" are not considered. The Blankenship WorkEval relies on a 6-Point Decision Making Paradigm, only one of which is the Kinesiophysical approach. This 6-Point Decision Making Paradigm provides FCE Evaluators with confidence that they are making the best decisions possible
with abundant research supporting the most critical decisions.
Other FCE Systems require a Deep Squat Leg Lifting Posture while lifting from the Floor Level, because they feel it's the "safest way to lift". But this is professionally naive. First, there is no research that proves a Deep Squat Leg Lift is the safest way to lift, it's based purely on professional bias. Second, workers with Knee pain can't Squat and obese workers can't use a Deep Squat Leg Lift posture, so those workers will not be allowed to return to work. Third, a Deep Squat Leg Lift can't be used in All Lifting Situations, like lifting from the bottom of a Mail Cart. And fourth, Large Packages cannot be lifted with a Deep Squat Leg Lift Posture. The Blankenship WorkEval uses a "Real World Lifting" approach, based on published research, which allows the worker to choose the proper weight based on the type of lifting posture being utilized. It's the most sensible and safest way to approach Floor Lifting for an FCE.
Most FCE Systems evaluate Lifting for the "Occasional Frequency" only, and then they use the U.S. Dept. of Labor's Work Ratios to "extrapolate" how much weight can be handled "Frequently" and "Constantly". One system doesn't believe that work is performed more than "Occasional" and most systems cannot perform Job-Specific FCE's. All of these approaches induce large errors in their results and they cannot answer the critical questions about specific job requirements. The Blankenship WorkEval has testing protocols for the Rare, Infrequent, Occasional, Frequent
and Constant Frequencies of work, and we have Job-Specific FCE Protocols as well so we can match a worker to a specific job. So every work situation is covered by The Blankenship WorkEval.
The Blankenship WorkEval Written Report has received accolades for its simplicity and specificity.
A good FCE Report should have the following characteristics: 1. Well Organized, 2. Detailed and Comprehensive, 3. Brief and Succinct, 4. Easy to Read with Straight-Forward Language, 5. Easy
to Understand and Devoid of Vague Language, and 6. It Includes the Evaluator's Professional Opinions, Where Appropriate. The Blankenship WorkEval Written Report contains all of these attributes in a 2-3 page report that takes about 30 minutes to complete. It's designed for the busy physician to be able to read in 1-2 minutes, but also for the Medical Case Managers, Employers and Attorneys, who want objective evidence of work capability and cooperation with the FCE process. The Blankenship WorkEval Written Report is the standard-bearer for the FCE industry.
The Blankenship WorkEval Results Form provides the referral sources with a detailed synopsis of the worker's ability to work in 26 Work-Related Categories, the U.S. Dept., of Labor's Physical Demand Classification of Work, a Job-Matching Section, and a signature line for the referring physician to certify that they are in agreement with
the patient's ability to work. And an optional component is The Blankenship WorkEval Results Laminated Card, which is given to the worker so they can keep a copy of their work restrictions with them at all times to help prevent a reinjury. The Blankenship Workeval Results Form and Laminated Card are industry standards that elevates
The Blankenship WorkEval above all other FCE Systems.
The Blankenship WorkEval Video Seminar is the New Way to train FCE Evaluators. You'll never have to leave your practice to attend a live FCE Seminar. Stay home and treat your patients with no loss of continuity or income while you're completing your FCE Training.  You'll never have to worry about losing your FCE Evaluator because you can train a new evaluator at any time. And you never have to leave home while your being trained, so there's no family disruptions or inconveniences. The Workeval Video Seminar is presented in 30 min. segments that can be viewed at your convenience. The videos demonstrate every test on models with a variety of Orthopaedic problems, and Blankenship draws from his extensive video library to show you dozens of Malingerers being tested so you can see how this difficult population tries to fake their pain and disability. It's a training experience you'll never get with any other FCE System.
